SCL changed from a snake to auction draft following the 2020 season, that gives us 5 years of data to look at. For comparison sake, I also took a look at the previous 5 years of snake draft results.
A quick look here will tell just how dominate Jon has been since the auction started. In the last 5 snakes, Jones collected a Gold and a Bronze, which is more than respectable. But since the auction started, he’s ramped it up; 3 Golds and a Bronze. It’s pretty gross to be honest.
The flip to that might be Dave, who has had no luck (drunkenly) navigating the auction system, racking up a 29-41 record over that time, with only one playoff appearance. But that tells only part of the story. Dave had quite a nice run in the early 2010s, before falling off following his 2015 title…

Dave has actually been slightly better in the auction era than he’d been in the previous several snake drafts. Especially if you take out the 2016 run when he went 8-5 and claimed a Silver Trophy. Without 2016, that W% drops from .369 to a paltry .307 – so there is perhaps something else at play there.

So this would seem to explain why Kyle (and maybe Matt?) wants to go back to a snake draft, while Kaiser and Tan have certainly faired well during this era. Kronner, who is one of the auction’s biggest proponents, has actually seen his W% dip, and after making the title game twice during the last 4 snakes, has been held to a single Bronze in the auction era.
I don’t have numbers on the runtime of the drafts, but we do know that auction gives you an option to finish quickly. During the first 2 years of the auction Sanchez finished his selections a good 30 minutes ahead of everyone else, while the snake takes up the same amount of time for everyone who stays for it all.
And since less than half of the league will be at Dave’s tonight to discuss changes – I thought we could get a baseline for what all the other managers think…
