2021 Best Positional Coach: Kicker Edition

Ah, the all-important, most sought-after distinction of all the position groups – the placekicker. A position full of legends like Jason Hanson, Matt Prater’s breathalyzer, and Sebastian Janikowski’s rap sheet.

After a brief reprieve of Dave not being an embarrassment, we come back to normalcy with the BF3000s dragging the average down for everyone. As for who’s at the top, I really thought this was Timmo’s award to lose – and lose it he did. Justin Tucker was good enough to set an NFL record and beat the Lions, but not quite good enough to win things here. Instead, it was Keanu Johnny Utah Josh who takes the lead here.

“I caught at patriot in free agency!”

The most expensive kicker on Draft Night was Younghoe Koo ($6, Sanchez), and the first kicker off of the board was Robbie Gould ($4, Dave). Considering that Steve and Dave finished 11 and 12 in Kicker scoring seems to indicate that wasn’t the best strategy. Koo finished the years as K16, while Gould was K22. Daniel Carlson was K1 for the year. He was drafted for $1 by Trigger with pick #261/264. Unfortunately for Triggs, he was dropped just 4 days later, and was picked up and dropped by Dave, and then by Matt, and finished out the year on the Mexico City squad. K2 was Nick Folk, who was drafted as a… backup kicker by the Quasars? He too was dropped shortly after the draft, and eventually picked up by the Sentinels.

A more detailed breakdown shows us that Dave averaged only 89 points a game from the position, with a low mark coming in week 9 when Mason Crosby finished with -5 points. Not to be left out, the other Alley brother also put up a -5 a few weeks later. The highest total by a kicker this year was 343 points – which somehow happened twice, but in week 12. Steve and Josh benefited from those games – with Carlson and Folk doing the actual legwork.

And if we drop out both the highest and lowest scores…it hurts almost everyone. The only averages that go up are Kronner (+4), Kyle (+2.7), Matt (+0.2) and Ryan (+0.1).
