Looking Back at Pre-Draft QB Projections

Every year we gather around the glow of a computer monitor and do our best not to embarrass ourselves during the draft. For 25 years we’ve done this Yahoo, and in front of our eyes, Yahoo suggests their rankings as a guideline. We all know these suggestions are all but worthless for IDPs, but how well did they predict the offense this year? We’ll start with the Quarterbacks.

So this year, pre-draft, this was Yahoo’s QB1 projection…

  1. Josh Allen
  2. Jalen Hurts
  3. Patrick Mahomes
  4. Lamar Jackson
  5. Anthony Richardson
  6. Kyler Murray
  7. CJ Stroud
  8. Jayden Daniels
  9. Jordan Love
  10. Dak Prescott
  11. Joe Burrow
  12. Brock Purdy

Notice what they got wrong already? Couple of obvious problems here. Let’s take a look at every QB we drafted…

QUARTERBACK PRE-DRAFT ACTUAL TOTAL AVG. DRAFT COST
Lamar Jackson 4 1 2632 376 Josh $38
Joe Burrow 11 3 2175 311 Mark $39
Brock Purdy 12 5 2082 297 Jim $1
Jayden Daniels 8 6 2067 331* Kron $4
Josh Allen 1 7 2067 295 Chris $50
Kyler Murray 6 8 1901 272 Kron $6
Kirk Cousins 17 9 1837 262 Kyle $8
CJ Stroud 7 10 1827 261 Josh $12
Jared Goff 14 11 1814 302 Ryan $28
T. Lawrence 15 12 1779 254 Ryan $1
Aaron Rodgers 20 13 1772 253 Dave $1
Jalen Hurts 2 14 1678 280 Trig $18
Dak Prescott 10 15 1654 276 Cork $16
Jordan Love 9 17 1625 325 Jim $30
Caleb Williams 13 21 1531 255 Mark $1
Patrick Mahomes 3 22 1493 249 Matt $41
Justin Herbert 18 23 1253 209 Dave $11
M. Stafford 19 24 1244 207 Jones $2
A. Richardson 5 29 910 182 Jones $12
Tua Tagovailoa 16 35 476 238 Chris $7

*Josh Allen and Jayden Daniels have the same total, but I divided Daniel’s total by 6.25 rather than 7 as he only played about a quarter this week. Sorry Chris.

So QB’s 2 & 4 (Baker and Geno) went undrafted, but we nailed the rest of the Top 24 at least! Of Yahoo’s Top 12, only 7 currently rank there, and of the 5 they missed on, they’re ranked lower not out of injury, but poor performance. True Richardson got hurt, but his 182 ppg wouldn’t have him anywhere the top anyway.

While Josh and Mark spent big money on QB ($38 & $39), they’re probably pretty happy with the returns so far. Lamar looks like the MVP again, and Joe Burrow is Top 5 and ascending since Higgins got back. I can not imagine Tan is thrilled however, having paid $50 for the dude who is currently sitting at QB7. I feel confident since I only paid $6 for QB8 and I’m pissed about it.

The biggest miss here though, by both Yahoo and Second Dick, is Patty Mahomes, who is delivering real world wins for Kansas City, but riding his QB22 ranking into a putrid 2-5 start to the fantasy season. Mahomes is delivering Matt, who refuses to bench the NFL’s Poster Boy, a paltry 36.4 points per dollar spent thus far. That is… not good.

QUARTERBACK TOTAL COST PP$
Brock Purdy 2082 1 2082.00
T. Lawrence 1779 1 1779.00
Aaron Rodgers 1772 1 1772.00
Caleb Williams 1531 1 1531.00
M. Stafford 1244 2 622.00
Jayden Daniels 2067 4 516.75
Kyler Murray 1901 6 316.83
Kirk Cousins 1837 8 229.63
CJ Stroud 1827 12 152.25
Justin Herbert 1253 11 113.91
Dak Prescott 1654 16 103.38
Jalen Hurts 1678 18 93.22
Anthony Richardson 910 12 75.83
Lamar Jackson 2632 38 69.26
Tua Tagovailoa 476 7 68.00
Jared Goff 1814 28 64.79
Joe Burrow 2175 39 55.77
Jordan Love 1625 30 54.17
Josh Allen 2067 50 41.34
Patrick Mahomes 1493 41 36.41

Jim is obviously getting some fantastic value from Purdy, even though Love is his primary and has a better ppg (325>297). Tua and Richardson both got hurt, but these mostly just go in order of price til you hit Lamar. The only players that went for less than $12 and still have at least 2000 points are Purdy and Daniels. Everyone else over 2k points cost at least $38.
