2021 Best Positional Coach: Running Back Edition

As we close out the offense, we see another colossal choke job involving Josh – though this time, unlike the Kicker post, Josh is on the choking-side of the equation, thanks to several injuries to guys like Henry, Robinson, and Kamara.

Through 10 weeks this looked like a runaway win for the Sentinels, but then Jonathan Taylor went all beast mode and carried the rest of Chris’ team to their 2nd straight RB title.

Even better for C Tan vs. The World, they actually spent the 2nd fewest dollars at the position on draft night, with Taylor’s $49 price tag looking like an absolute steal in retrospect. It’s even more impressive when you see some of the guys that cost more – Ekeler (RB2) at $67 was still a great value, and Derrick Henry maintained the best points-per-game-average, finishing 20 points ahead of Taylor, so you can’t really fault his $78 bid, but there are some other guys like Aaron Jones (RB12, $74) and Dalvin Cook (RB14, $81) that look harder to justify on the surface.

Team RB Draft $$ PP$
1 Tan 4539 $61 74.4
2 Josh 4515 $170 26.6
3 Kronner 3776 $107 35.3
4 Kaiser 3683 $80 46.0
5 Ryan 3670 $117 31.4
6 Timmy 3548 $91 39.0
7 Steve 3520 $49 71.8
8 Dave 3507 $89 39.4
9 Matt 3496 $119 29.4
10 Trigger 3445 $119 28.9
11 Kyle 3380 $84 40.2
12 Jones 3330 $75 44.4

The most points scored based on Draft Dollars spent is still Chris, so he not only takes the total but was the most efficient in achieving it as well. Sanchez comes in 2nd there with 71 points per dollar spent, but he also only drafted 2 RBs, so his numbers are skewed a bit. Josh’s number is last thanks to all of his RBs missing time, which can also played a role for Trigger and Matt, who saw injuries to CMac and Cook.

Here’s how the running backs finished in relation to their draft night cost. I came up with a “Score” ranking, though I’m open to amending it if someone has a better formula. This one accounts for how many points they scored per week (not game), with penalties for missed games, and accounting for Draft Cost. However, since players who only cost $1 are at a distinct advantage, I broke it into sections – RB1, RB2, and Depth Picks. These were based on draft cost, not roster spots.

Let’s start with the Top 12 – RB1

Player Team Total Points Points Per Week Games Missed Draft $$$ Score
J. Taylor C Tan vs. 3431 263.9 0 $49 5.4
Joe Mixon Timmo 2557 196.7 0 $41 4.8
Austin Ekeler Kaiser 2908 223.7 0 $67 3.3
Zeke Buritto War. 2238 172.2 0 $62 2.8
A, Jones BF3000 1930 148.5 1 $74 0.0
N. Chubb Tim Brady 2043 157.2 3 $53 -3.0
Dalvin Cook SEC. DECK 1843 141.8 3 $81 -4.2
Montgomery Quasars 1680 129.2 4 $39 -4.7
A. Kamara Sentinels 2042 157.1 4 $70 -5.8
Saquon Buritto War. 1271 97.8 4 $52 -6.1
D. Henry Sentinels 1806 138.9 5 $78 -8.2
C. McCaffrey Dutchmen 1085 83.5 6 $83 -11.0

No surprises in terms of the winner with Jonathan Taylor at the top, but it is a little surprising that only 4 of the 12 guys finished with a positive value.

RB2

For the 2nd tier of guys, we see a more positive rate of return with less money spent.

Player Team Total Points Points Per Week Games Missed Draft $$$ Score
N. Harris Mallrats 2597 199.8 0 $37 5.4
Mike Davis Tim Brady 1122 86.3 0 $19 4.5
A. Gibson Mallrats 2016 155.1 0 $38 4.1
J. Robinson Sentinels 1544 118.8 1 $21 3.7
J. Jacobs Mallrats 1910 146.9 2 $22 2.7
D. Swift Dutchmen 1789 137.6 2 $35 -0.1
D. Henderson Sc4_Skippers 1409 108.4 3 $22 -1.1
C. Edmounds Timmo 1243 95.6 4 $14 -1.2
M. Sanders Sc4_Skippers 1052 80.9 3 $19 -1.7
CEH Sc4_Skippers 1026 78.9 5 $34 -7.7
Chris Carson Timmo 416 32.0 9 $30 -16.9
JK Dobbins SECOND DECK 0 0.0 13 $36 -26.0

While things turned out pretty well for the Mallrats here, I was shocked to see Mike Davis come in 2nd, as he underperformed all year, and lost his starting gig. This may point to a weakness in my formula, but her was also the only player in this section to check in at less than $20.

DEPTH GUYS

As for the depth guys, there were a few steals here that because of their cost rank way above anyone else. Namely James Conner, Devin Singletary, and AJ Dillion – they are easily 3 of the best value picks at any position in this draft.

They all cost $1, played every game, and were productive. Can’t ask for more than that.

Player Team Total Points Points Per Week Games Missed Draft $$$ Score
James Conner Buritto War. 2252 173.2 0 $1 173.2
